Information

Interlaken lies in the Bernese Oberland, between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Very close to Lauterbrunnen Valley and the three mighty mountains, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, Interlaken is an ideal starting point for countless excursions around the most beautiful part of Switzerland. It is the main transport gateway to the mountains and the lakes of the region but also a well-known tourist destination for travelers. Although Interlaken is a beautiful city, it cannot be compared with the beauties of the whole Lauterbrunnen Valley and Grindelwald. The city has a population of 5,500 and the official language is German.

What To See...

Höhematte Park

This park is located in the city center and is one of the most popular spots in Interlaken. Without being remarkable, compared to other European parks we have visited, it is an ideal place for walking and other activities, especially if you have children.

Victoria Grand Hotel

Right in front of Höhematte Park, this historic hotel is one of the most recognizable buildings in the city. Exquisite outside and inside, it is the ultimate overnight experience in Interlaken. The hotel is famous for its spa, but also for the tremendous view it offers in the surrounding mountains. If you want to spend around 350-500 Swiss francs per night, then this is the best option.

Lake Thun

The well-known Lake Thun is right next to Interlaken and is a great place to relax and admire the views. Lake Thun named from the homonymous town of Thun on the other side of the lake and is one of the most popular lakes of Switzerland in general.

Lake Brienz

East of Interlaken is located the beautiful Lake Brienz. With a length of 14 km, Lake Brienz is surely one of the most beautiful lakes we have visited and offers some truly impressive views to the traveler. The village of Brienz and the stunning village of Iseltwald are the two most beautiful spots of the lake and we suggest you to visit them of course. If you can also make an excursion to one of the two lakes with the mini-cruise boats, then you will have lived an amazing experience in two of the finest lakes in Switzerland.

Nearby Excursions

There are a ton of things you can do around Interlaken mostly by visiting the unparalleled beauty of the Swiss nature, but for sure the best excursion is to visit the enchanting Lauterbrunnen Valley and the surrounding villages such as Wengen, Gimmelwald and Mürren. We have a lot of information about those places on our website, so we will not refer to them again here. Visit the Lauterbrunnen Valley page and also Grindelwald which is equally beautiful and find everything you need…

What To Eat

Interlaken is a small town but has enough restaurants if you want to try traditional Swiss cuisine or Turkish, as there are several shops which serving Turkish cuisine in Interlaken. Unfortunately, we did not found anything special on the restaurants we visited, and so we do not have to suggest you anything specific beyond the classic Swiss dishes like, Fondue, Raclete, Rösti, etc. Prices are of course very high, almost prohibitive for the average European and obviously you have to be very careful.

How to move

To move around the city of Interlaken, you will not need any means of transport, but the beauties lie in the surrounding lakes and in the magical Lauterbrunnen Valley of course. Ideally a car is by far the best and most affordable solution, but if you do not have your own car, you can go anywhere by train or bus from Interlaken. Fortunately, Interlaken is a city that is considered the starting point for some of Switzerland’s most popular excursions, so it is very easy to go almost everywhere from here, with a high cost, and of course it is not the best option.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Interlaken is quite expensive as it is normal, because it is one of the most popular cities in Switzerland. The are plenty of choices, as there are several hotels in the city center as well as in the surrounding area. Prices for a double room start from 120 Swiss francs and can easily exceed 300 if you want. You can make your reservations via Booking.com
