Berlin is the capital and the largest city of Germany, as well as one of its 16 states. With a steadily growing population of approximately 3.7 million, Berlin is the second most populous city in the European Union behind London and the seventh most populous urban area in the European Union. Located in northeastern Germany on the banks of the rivers Spree and Havel, it is the centre of the Berlin-Brandenburg Metropolitan region, which has roughly 6 million residents.
Berlin is a world city of culture, politics, media and science. Its economy is based on high tech firms and the service sector, encompassing a diverse range of creative industries, research facilities, media corporations and convention venues. Berlin is a continental hub for air and rail traffic and has a huge public transportation network.
What To See...
The Brandenburg Gate is perhaps the most recognizable sight of the city and the first picture that comes to mind when we hear the word Berlin. With a tremendous history, connected to very important events of Germany, it is surely one of the most famous attractions of the city and certainly should be one of the things you should see if you are in Berlin.
One of the most central squares in the city and a meeting point for locals and tourists. The characteristic building of the 365 meter TV tower is really impressive and it is definitely worth a visit if you find yourself here.
One of the most impressive buildings in the city is the German Parliament building. The glass dome is one of the most characteristic points and it is definitely an attraction that we recommend you to visit. The building is open to the public and you can take a tour every day from 08:00 to 24:00.
Berlin Cathedral is one of the city’s main attractions and you must definitely visit it. With a gorgeous exterior and interior, is located in a central part of the city next to the River Spree in the heart of Berlin.
Gedächtniskirche is not an ordinary church, but in fact, are the ruins of a church originally built in 1890. The ruined church tower is one of Berlin’s most characteristic and multiphotographed points. The new church built right next to Gedächtniskirche is really impressive, especially inside, where it is built entirely of glass that has a blue color. It is truly one of the most beautiful churches we have visited.
One of the city’s most historic sights is the Berlin Wall or better a part of the wall that separated the city in eastern and western Berlin a few years ago. Even today, the Germans are not proud of this wall at all and even call it the “Wall of shame”. The story of this wall is too big to analyze it on a page dedicated to travel, but we can tell you for sure that it is worth visiting if you are in Berlin.
Tiergarten is the largest and most beautiful park in Berlin. In the heart of the city and along the central boulevard Bundestrasse, which crosses this huge park, you will find an opportunity to enjoy a peaceful walk and enjoy the beauty of the landscape.
The Berlin Zoo is definitely the most beautiful zoo that we have visited so far! A large plot of land near the Tiergarten park where you can see lots of animals in an incredible setting! In the park you will be able to see elephants, monkeys, flamingos and even lions that you can approach in a very close distance. The zoo is really impressive and we definitely recommend you to visit it. The ticket price is 15 euros per person and opening hours are from 09:00-18:00 daily.
One of the most famous sights of this beautiful city is the so called Checkpoint Charlie. Not having anything special to see at this point except for a small kiosk with American soldiers that show how control and entry from the east to west Berlin was taking place. This place is very touristic and the exploitation with various souvenirs etc in the surrounding streets is huge. If, due to lack time, you do not have to see some of Berlin’s main attractions then Checkpoint Charlie must be sure one of them. Completely indifferent …
Potsdam square and the homonymous avenue that crosses it, is one of Berlin’s most famous shopping districts. Some huge shopping centers, cafes and restaurants are located around this area. If you want to shop in Berlin then Potsdam square is the perfect place to visit.
Berlin is a very big city and you will need several days to see the main attractions, but if you want to do a relatively short trip, then the one that we recommend you is the Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam, which is only 26 kilometers away from Berlin. With easy access by car or train from Berlin Central Station, the Sanssouci Palace is definitely the best attraction you can see near Berlin. The ticket costs 12 euros per person and opening hours are daily except Monday from 10:00-16:30.
What To Eat
In Berlin, there are really many dining options, since there are elements from various cuisines around the world, such as Turkish, Greek, Chinese and others, as in Berlin there are a large number of immigrants and people with different cultures from German . While we tried a lot of things and ate in some restaurants, mainly in the city center on several touristic spots, we have to say that nothing made us big impression to recommend it to you. Our advice is to ask a local who knows the secrets of the city better and what exactly you should avoid to be satisfied.
How to move
Berlin is a very big city and you will definitely need means of transport to get around easily and quickly. The best solution is the metro of the city, which has the characteristic U sign and is almost everywhere. The one way ticket is quite expensive as it costs 2,80 euros per person, while the unlimited weekly travel card costs 30 euros, and we believe it is the most advantageous solution for your transportation in the city.
Where to stay
Accommodation in Berlin is relatively cheap and the choices are really endless. A pretty good double room in the city center costs around 60-80 euros per night depending on the type of accommodation. There are even more affordable hotels in less central locations, but if they are close to a metro station they offer direct access to the city center in just a few minutes. Surely this way you will save enough money and the hotel will be much better than a similar one at the same price at a very central point. You can make your bookings via Booking.com
